A battery is an energy storage device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy; it is widely used in daily life, industrial production, transportation, and the new energy sector. Batteries generate electric current through internal electrochemical reactions, supplying the power required by various devices. Based on whether they can be recharged, batteries are generally classified into two main categories: primary batteries and secondary batteries. Primary batteries cannot be restored to their original state after use and must be replaced, whereas secondary batteries can be recharged to restore their energy, allowing for multiple cycles of use. Common types of rechargeable batteries today include lead-acid, lithium-ion, and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

 

The basic components of a battery include the positive electrode (cathode), negative electrode (anode), electrolyte, and separator. The electrodes are the primary components where chemical reactions occur and electron flow is generated; the electrolyte facilitates ion transport, while the separator isolates the positive and negative electrodes to prevent internal short circuits. During discharge, the negative electrode releases electrons that flow through an external circuit to the positive electrode, creating an electric current. During charging, an external power source drives the reversal of internal chemical reactions, allowing the battery to store energy again. Different battery types utilize different materials, resulting in variations regarding voltage, capacity, lifespan, safety, and operating environments.

 

Proper usage practices can effectively extend battery lifespan and enhance safety. Users should avoid prolonged overcharging, deep discharging, and operation in extreme temperatures, as these conditions can lead to reduced capacity, degraded performance, or even safety hazards. For rechargeable batteries, it is essential to use charging equipment compatible with the specific battery model to prevent damage caused by unsuitable chargers. Additionally, batteries intended for long-term storage should be kept at an appropriate charge level and stored in a dry, well-ventilated area away from high temperatures and direct sunlight.
